Parguera's Bioluninescent Bay
| The bioluminescent bay is located to the east part of La Parguera, and is one of only a few places in the world where the phenomenon can be observed. The microorganisms responsible for the bioluminescent effect are the dinoflagellates of the species Pyrodinium bahemense. The effect can be seen only on dark nights. | |
| In recent decades, stresses on the natural system of La Parguera have caused concern among public officials and private individuals. These stresses have created a problem; damage to the bioluminescent dinoflagellates caused by pollution. Pollution has altered the ecology of the mangrove-lined waterways and has caused a drop in the phenomenon. Twenty years ago the population rate was 720,000 individuals/gallon of water. Currently this rate has been cut down to 400,000 individuals/gallon of water. | |

The bioluminescent effect is
affected by:
Excess illumination of nearby areas. The effect can not be seen if there is too much light in the area. |
| It is important that we do something in order to protect and preserve the bioluminescent bay. Not only would the pheneomenon be lost, but also the tourism-dependent economy of La Parguera would be damaged if nothing is done. | |
