Proposal for the Preservation of
Parguera's Bioluninescent Bay

As a requisite for a college class, we had to write a proposal. We came up with a few ideas for the preservation of the bioluminescent bay of La Parguera. These ideas are rough, but may be a start for a real solution for this very important problem.
The folowing plan of action was developed to assure the preservation of the Bay and its natural resources, while maintaining it value as a turist attraction.
Sketch of Proposed Changes      The first part of our plan is to close the bay so that no motorboats can enter it. This can be achieved by constructing a reef in the entrance of the bay. The reef will contain an underwater passage in the form of a roman arc, so that the natural underwater currents are not affected. At the same time, the reef will promote mangrove growth, as well as an increase in microbes' populations.

The second part consists of building a boardwalk that leads to the bay. With the use of this boardwalk and tour guides, tourists will be able to walk to the bay and observe the bioluminescent phenomenon. Tour guides and park rangers would take care that nothing is thrown in the water during visiting hours. The tours will be operated by the same entities that operate the boats that are currently used to transport tourists to the bay.
