Hawksbill Sea Turtle
Spanish Name: "Carey de Concha"
(Eretmochelys imbrica)


     The Hawksbill Sea Turtle or "Carey de Concha" is the most common sea turtle in Puerto Rico. Due to overfishing, egg collecting and beach alterations it is now an endangered species.

    They measure about 3.28feet (1m) and can weight up to 100lbs (45kg). Its shell is formed by six brown and yellow plates. Its skin is also brown and yellow. They eat sponges and algi near coral reefs.

     The following beaches have been designated as critical habitats for  the Hawksbill sea Turtle:
        - Isla de Mona
        - Playa Resaca
        - Playa Brava
        - Playa Larga de Culebra
        - Playa Sur de Cayo Norte (Culebra)
        - Isla Culebrita
Fishing Sea Turtles is prohibited by Law.
